Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is considered a potential clean fossil fuel in the future because the combustion process produces fewer harmful gases and does not emit soot, smoke, and dust. Using LNG is the best solution for protecting the environment, and along with that, there are several benefits in terms of economy and efficiency. Some applications and benefits of LNG are described in the following paragraph.
1. LNG introduction
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has CH4 - methane (94,3%) as a main ingredient, is odorless, colorless, light, and fades quickly in the air. LNG is liquified at -162 oC, accounting for 1/600 the air volume compared to natural gas in standard condition, so it is convenient for reserving and transporting from the production place to markets around the world.

2. The application and benefits of LNG
While the world concentrates on reducing environmental pollution, LNG quickly becomes an effective solution, substituting traditional energy sources such as coal and oil because of their less harmful emissions.
2.1. The application of LNG
When LNG is consumed, it converts back to the gaseous state while it passing through regasifying equipment and is used similarly to natural gas. Some applications of LNG are:
-
Electricity and gas development: LNG is a low-emission energy that does not emit soot, dust, or smoke and offers a higher energy value; in other words, LNG can generate more electricity per ton than coal can.
-
Industrial consumption: LNG is used as fuel for machinery and equipment, providing thermal energy for production processes such as metallurgy, drying, etc.
-
Alternative fuels in transportation: Many countries around the world use LNG as fuel for vehicles such as ships, trains, and heavy trucks to reduce environmental pollution and prolong the product life, saving fuel costs.

2.2. The benefits of LNG
About the environment
LNG is currently evaluated as the cleanest fossil fuel and the best solution to reduce greenhouse emissions and climate change. The LNG combustion process releases less than 30% CO2 compared to fuel oil, less than 45% CO2 compared to coal, reduces twice the emissions of nitrogen oxides, and emits no SO2 emissions into the environment. LNG also doesn’t release soot or smoke that causes air pollution. In addition, its lighter characteristics and rapid dissipation in the air make LNG not as damaging as gasoline and oil in event of a leak.

About the economy
LNG accounts for 1/600th of the volume of natural gas in standard conditions, making it a convenient and cost-effective alternative. This not only saves on transportation costs but also enhances competitive advantages in the market compared to traditional fuels.. LNG priced is also more competitively than traditional fuels such as gasoline and oil, while efficient performance is the same or greater. On the other hand, using LNG does not leave residue in engines and equipment, helping to prolong life and reduce maintenance costs.

LNG is a clean energy source of the future, safe, and brings a lot of benefits in terms of economy and efficiency. Trying to achieve its target of ensuring national energy security and serving national development in association with environmental protection, Vietnam is currently determined to enter the LNG market. In the upcoming time, our country will start to import LNG to accommodate domestic demand and fulfill the shortfall in domestic energy supply, which is on the decline. Gas South, one of the top CNG and LNG business companies, has prepared the infrastructure to receive and trade LNG when this product is expected to be imported into Vietnam at the end of 2023.
