The global trend of using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for transportation — particularly for buses and taxis — is becoming increasingly widespread.
According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in major cities such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, emissions from vehicles mainly include carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), fuel vapors, lead particles, benzene, and PM2.5 dust — all of which are harmful pollutants.
In contrast, vehicles using CNG significantly reduce environmental pollution, as CNG is non-toxic, less flammable, and lighter than air, meaning that any leakage will disperse quickly and rise, minimizing safety risks and air contamination.
Currently, the PetroVietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) is the sole supplier of CNG in Vietnam, holding nearly 100% of the domestic market share.
CNG Vietnam JSC operates the first CNG production plant in Phu My I Industrial Zone, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, with a phase-one capacity of 30 million cubic meters per year, expected to increase to 250 million cubic meters per year in the next phase. Meanwhile, the Southern Gas Trading Joint Stock Company (PV Gas South) is investing in a new CNG production plant located in My Xuan A Industrial Zone, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, with an initial capacity of 10 million cubic meters per year.
Notably, in October, PV GAS will inaugurate the first CNG refueling station in Ho Chi Minh City — a milestone marking Vietnam’s progress toward cleaner energy solutions.
With its environmental advantages and cost efficiency, CNG is poised to become a preferred fuel choice for many transportation enterprises in the near future, contributing to a cleaner and greener environment.
