According to experts, the temporary shutdown of the Dung Quat oil refinery was caused by a malfunction in the flow control valve for catalyst powder, which transports gas from the first regenerator to the second regenerator using lift gas. This specialized valve, nearly 9 meters long and 0.8 meters in diameter, was manufactured in Italy. It operates under extremely high temperatures of up to 650°C and endures significant abrasive conditions.
The shutdown, which began on August 16, has resulted in three crude oil tankers—carrying a total of 240,000 tons from the Bach Ho oil field (Vung Tau)—having to remain anchored offshore near Viet Thanh Bay (Dung Quat Economic Zone) for nearly a month, incurring substantial costs.
