As part of the 2018 annual activity plan, the Southern Gas Trading Joint Stock Company organized a “Back to the Roots” program for its employees in Con Dao on October 18–19, 2018.
After nearly a morning of travel from Ho Chi Minh City, the delegation of Southern Gas Trading Company officials set foot on the legendary Con Dao – a place once known as “hell on earth,” a land that still tells the stories of those who have passed, whose spirits seem to linger behind the rows of casuarina trees, whispering reminders to future generations of their heroic legacy.
The first stop of the delegation was the Hang Duong Cemetery. This is the final resting place of thousands of Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers and patriots who were imprisoned from 1862 to 1975. The delegation members laid wreaths and solemnly bowed in remembrance of the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the national liberation struggle on this sacred land of Con Dao.
To gain a deeper understanding of the hardships and sufferings endured by political prisoners during their time in the Con Dao prison system, the delegation visited and witnessed firsthand the “hell on earth” where communist fighters were once imprisoned — including Phu Hai, Phu Tuong prisons, “tiger cages,” “cow cages,” rice-grinding pits, and more — all of which showcased the inhumane and brutal forms of both physical and mental torture. The visit inspired even greater admiration for the unwavering spirit of the communist fighters who gave their lives for the cause of national liberation.
The “Back to the Roots” journey in Con Dao left a profound impression on all participants, reminding them of the nation’s proud revolutionary traditions. Building on the spirit gained from this field trip, the company’s staff became even more determined to fulfill their assigned work targets, contributing in their own small way to the country’s development — worthy of the great sacrifices made by the heroic martyrs who laid down their lives for the independence and freedom of the nation.
